“Where the surf meets the turf in old Del Mar” – those are the first several words to a song that the Del Mar Racetrack has used to promote its horseracing venue for the past 60 or so years. Good Guys Rod & Custom Association has produced the Del Mar Nationals presented by Meguiar’s for 10 years now, though you’d think that they’d held the show at the Del Mar Racetrack and Fairgrounds for much longer than that.

The Good Guys series of shows across the United States are all professionally produced must attend events for owners and fans of street rods, hot rods and muscle machines. There’s always live entertainment, an immense field of show winning worthy street rods, hot rods and muscle cars, typically a very competitive auto cross and an enormous crowd of show goers and participants. Even in the odd moments where Mother Nature intercedes and brings some inclement weather, the Good Guys shows simply never disappoint. The show cars that compete for the litany of awards given out are always well turned out.

We’ve covered the Good Guys events across America and regard the Del Mar show as our favorite, not just for the noteworthy automobiles, but also more for the venue. The Del Mar Racetrack definitely has a mystique to it, and the entire place feels as though it’s stuck in a bygone era. So many famous movie stars from the 1940s through the 1960s used to make Del Mar their personal playground, when the Hollywood film studios weren’t shooting a movie. Are the ghosts of Hollywood appreciating all of the automotive finery that converges on Del Mar in early April? Perhaps they are. The venue certainly feels as though it’s stuck in time, but in a very good way.

Redline Review captured more cars at their best ever than we could run in an article. Consider yourself forewarned that if you’d really like to appreciate all that is Good Guys Del Mar, you’d better show up yourself next year and take in the timeless appeal of this Hollywood playground. Until then, feast your eyes on some of the automotive standouts that captured our fancy in the following photographic and digital art gallery.
